COVID-19 Antibody Testing

Now available through HealthFit family medicine

What is the COVID-19 antibody blood test?

Antibodies are proteins in the body that assist in fighting off infections. COVID-19 antibody testing, also known as antibody blood test or serology test, checks the blood for the presence of specific antibodies that show if an individual had a previous infection of the COVID-19 virus.

However, this method cannot be used to diagnose active cases of COVID-19 because during an active infection, the body will not have been able to develop enough antibodies for the test to detect.

The FDA has authorized the emergency use of several COVID-19 antibody tests. Effective immediately, HealthFit Family Medicine is offering the antibody test through LabCorp.

Who is the COVID-19 antibody test for?

Before ordering an antibody test, we will first conduct a telemedicine or in-office visit to ensure we select the appropriate COVID-19 test. The antibody test can confirm if an individual has previously had the COVID-19 virus. Ideal candidates include:

  • An individual with a history of (not present) COVID-19 symptoms.
  • An individual who has had contact with and/or suspected exposure to COVID-19.

The expected turn-around time for test results is three to five business days.

Patients with active COVID-19 symptoms are NOT candidates

An individual currently experiencing at least two or more COVID-19 symptoms as listed below will not benefit from the antibody test, as the test can only detect past infections – once the body has had a chance to develop enough antibodies.

Active COVID-19 symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • Cough.
  • Fever.
  • New loss of taste or smell.
  • Chills.
  • Repeated shaking with chills.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Headache.
  • Sore throat.

If someone is actively experiencing symptoms, we may recommend the individual pursue the diagnostic secretion swab test that has historically been performed during this pandemic to confirm a COVID-19 diagnosis (not currently available at HealthFit).

Billing & insurance

LabCorp has confirmed to HealthFit that insurance will 100% cover the cost of the antibody test. Patients will not be responsible for any cost, as there is no co-pay or deductible. This includes patients that are on Medicare or Medicaid.

Uninsured or cash pay patients will be responsible for the price of the test only, which is estimated to be less than $100.
