What is Botox?

Botox is made of botulinum toxin, a substance naturally produced by microbes found throughout nature. Botox is used to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. It is also used as a treatment for some medical conditions.

The most common use for Botox is as a nonsurgical, injectable cosmetic procedure to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles, which reduces movements that can cause smile lines, frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet. The needles we use are so small that the treatment is relatively painless.

How long does Botox last?

The effects of Botox will eventually wear off, and patients will need repeat treatments. Patients who receive Botox regularly usually see results within 14 days, the effects of which last between 3 to 4 months.

In some cases, regular use of Botox may cause the effects to last for a longer period of time. This is because when muscles are not used, they become shorter and smaller. Since Botox paralyzes the muscles so they cannot be used, regular use may allow patients to go longer between treatments, sometimes up to 6 months.

HealthFit’s approach to Botox

Botox aesthetic treatment

Along with healthy habits such as wearing sunscreen, not smoking and staying hydrated, Botox for cosmetic purposes is a helpful tool we can use to help our patients look and feel their best. Our goal is to provide our patients with a natural-looking result. We avoid using amounts of Botox that can result in the stereotypical “frozen” look often associated with improper application of Botox.

Botox treatment for chronic migraines

In addition to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, Botox can also be used as a migraine prevention. Our providers are trained and experienced in using Botox to counteract chronic migraine headaches, which are debilitating headaches that throb and produce intense pain and are often accompanied by nausea.

We use Botox only for chronic migraine cases, which means at least 14 headache days per month. Botox helps our chronic migraine patients get back to regular family interactions, execution of work duties, their normal social lives, and quality of life aspects that the headaches can severely impede. Relief lasts up to 3 months, depending on the patient.

Risks & side effects of Botox

Although Botox is a safe cosmetic treatment, it’s important to choose a provider who is experienced and knowledgeable on how Botox works. Our providers certified to perform aesthetic Botox injections – Dr. Werner, Dr. Page and Kim Engler, P.A. – have all been specially trained in how to use Botox.

When Botox is not properly administered, the results can be a patient’s face appearing to be stiff, frozen and unnatural. Our providers skillfully administer Botox to achieve the desired results of a healthy and natural look.

Side effects of Botox use for migraines include the same as for aesthetic uses, plus neck pain and headache.

It is common for Botox patients to have small, pea-sized bumps near the injection sites for up to 30 minutes following the injection. These bumps are caused by the saline solution in the Botox injection and go away once the saline is absorbed into the body.

As with any medical treatment, Botox injections carry potential side effects, which healthcare providers discuss with every patient in advance.
