Kybella Before and After Photos | Centura Medical Group HealthFit Family Medicine | Castle RockWhat is Kybella?

Kybella is a nonsurgical treatment to reduce chin fat also known as a double chin. Kybella is the brand name of the generic deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule that helps the body break down and absorb fat from foods. The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid.

When injected into subcutaneous fat, the fat just beneath the skin, this molecule permanently eliminates fat cells. Once Kybella destroys the fat cells under the chin, there is no longer a way to store and retain fat cells there, preventing future fat from accumulating.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Kybella for use in reducing chin fat in 2015. It is not approved for use on other fat deposits in the body.

Before Kybella was approved for this use, surgery was the only way to correct a double chin. Many people struggling with a double chin did not want to pursue the surgical option. Kybella has opened the way for more people to attain the appearance they desire.

Chin fat often contributes to the appearance of having excess fat overall. A double chin can also make people look older than they really are. These factors can make one feel self-conscious, embarrassed and even unhappy.

Chin fat is difficult to prevent and to reverse. For example, one can eat right, exercise and still have a double chin. Kybella has proven to be a viable treatment for many people seeking to address the negative appearance of a double chin.

HealthFit’s approach to treating double chins

HealthFit medical providers first examine the patient and rule out other causes of a double chin. Kybella is not for every patient, and we identify issues related to fat accumulation that indicate whether or not the individual is a good candidate for the Kybella treatment.

Our providers are trained in understanding the anatomy of the chin area and are experienced in the proper application of Kybella. The effectiveness and safety of Kybella requires proper needle placement in the correct location of the chin, the appropriate number of injections, and understanding of other techniques used in administering the treatment.

Treatment plans can require up to 2-4 rounds of injections, with each treatment spaced about 6 weeks apart. Some patients may not need all four treatments, depending on the amount of fat they have under their chin and their desired results.

The results from Kybella treatments are long-lasting, so patients do not need any additional injections to maintain their new look.

During each session, patients receive 20-40 injections under their chin. A temporary tattoo is placed over the treatment area to guide injections. Before administrating Kybella, the providers at HealthFit may use a numbing cream or lidocaine numbing injections under the chin.

The most common side effects of Kybella include swelling, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the site of the injections. To reduce these side effects, it is recommended that patients ice the treated area and take ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) after the procedure. During clinic trials for Kybella, some patients experienced a nerve injury that manifested as an asymmetrical smile or facial weakness, difficulty swallowing and hair loss around the injection site.
